Begin the expedition by travelling from Islamabad to Skardu, the main gateway to the Karakoram. A scenic flight can provide spectacular views of the northern mountains when weather permits. Overnight in Skardu.

Spend the day in Skardu completing final preparations for the trek. Your team can check trekking equipment, permits, food, luggage and other expedition logistics.

This is also an opportunity to explore Skardu and rest before entering the remote Baltoro region.

Travel by 4×4 jeep through the spectacular Braldu Valley towards Askole, the traditional gateway to the Baltoro Glacier trekking route.

The road becomes increasingly rugged as you approach the remote mountain settlements. Overnight camping at Askole.

Note: Road access conditions can change. Some current itineraries use extended jeep access toward Jhola, while others retain Askole as the trekking start point.

The adventure officially begins.

Leave Askole and follow the Braldu Valley along rugged mountain trails. The landscape gradually changes from inhabited valleys to increasingly remote wilderness.

The route follows the river and crosses several streams before reaching Jhola, where you spend your first night in the Karakoram wilderness.

Distance: ~20–21 km
Trekking: 6–8 hours

Continue deeper into the Braldu Valley towards Paiju.

This is one of the longer trekking days, with sections of relatively exposed and rocky terrain. The landscape becomes increasingly dramatic as the first major Karakoram peaks begin to dominate the horizon.

Paiju is an important camping location and the last major green oasis before entering the Baltoro Glacier environment.

Altitude: ~3,400 m

A rest and acclimatization day at Paiju allows your body to adjust before the trek reaches higher elevations.

Depending on conditions, you can take short walks around camp, enjoy views of Paiju Peak and the surrounding mountains, and prepare for the transition onto the Baltoro Glacier.

This rest day is an important part of a responsible high-altitude itinerary.

Today you leave the greener landscape behind and begin approaching the Baltoro Glacier.

The trail becomes more rugged, with increasingly impressive views of the Trango Towers, Uli Biaho and Cathedral Peaks.

Arrive at Khoburtse and camp beneath the spectacular Karakoram skyline.

Altitude: ~4,050–4,130 m
Distance: ~6–8 km
Trekking: 4–5 hours

A shorter but spectacular trekking day takes you towards Urdukas.

As the altitude increases, vegetation becomes scarce and the surrounding mountains appear increasingly enormous.

Urdukas is famous for its spectacular campsite and views towards the Trango Towers, Cathedral Peak and surrounding Karakoram peaks.

Altitude: ~4,250–4,300 m
Distance: ~12 km
Trekking: 6–7 hours

Today you move onto the glacial terrain of the Baltoro Glacier.

The trail follows the glacier's central moraine, with huge mountains rising on both sides. Walking conditions become more demanding as the terrain consists of rocks, ice and uneven glacial surfaces.

Overnight at Goro II, surrounded by an extraordinary high-altitude landscape.

Altitude: ~4,500–4,600 m
Distance: ~10–14 km
Trekking: 5–7 hours

This is one of the most anticipated days of the expedition.

Continue eastwards across the Baltoro Glacier towards Concordia, the spectacular meeting point of several glaciers.

As you approach Concordia, the mountains become increasingly impressive. On clear days, views can include K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum IV, Mitre Peak and other giants of the Karakoram.

Arrive at Concordia and establish camp.

Altitude: ~4,600 m

Take a much-needed acclimatization and rest day at Concordia.

This is an excellent opportunity to explore the surrounding glacier environment and prepare for the highest and most demanding section of the trek.

Depending on weather, fitness and itinerary, an optional excursion towards Broad Peak Base Camp may be possible. Some operators schedule this excursion as a separate trekking day.

Trekking: ~7–10+ hours

The highlight of the entire expedition.

Start early from Concordia and follow the Godwin-Austen Glacier towards K2.

The surrounding landscape becomes increasingly dramatic as the mighty K2 (8,611 m) rises above the glacier.

The trail eventually reaches K2 Base Camp, at approximately 5,150 metres, beneath the enormous south face of the world's second-highest mountain.

Spend time at the base camp, take photographs and, when conditions allow, visit the Gilkey Memorial area before beginning the return journey.

Return to Concordia for the night.

This is a long and demanding high-altitude day, and the exact distance varies between itineraries. Published routes report anything from roughly 10–12 km to around 18–20 km for the round trip depending on the precise route and measurement method.

After reaching K2 Base Camp, begin the return journey.

Retrace your route across the upper Baltoro Glacier towards Goro II.

The landscape looks completely different when viewed in the opposite direction, offering new perspectives of the enormous mountain walls surrounding the glacier.

Continue descending the Baltoro Glacier towards Khoburtse.

As you lose altitude, the air becomes noticeably warmer and the physical demands of the high-altitude environment gradually decrease.

Enjoy renewed views of the Trango Towers, Uli Biaho and Cathedral Peaks before reaching Khoburtse.

Leave the upper Baltoro region and descend towards Paiju.

The landscape gradually changes from barren glacial terrain to areas with more vegetation and running water.

Arrive at Paiju, where you can relax after several demanding days at high altitude.

Continue down the Braldu Valley.

This is another relatively long trekking day, following the river and retracing the trail towards Jhola.

The warmer temperatures and lower altitude provide welcome relief after the high-altitude sections of the trek.

Trekking: 5–7 hours

Complete the final trekking stage of the K2 Base Camp expedition.

Follow the Braldu Valley back towards Askole, where the road and jeeps mark the end of the remote wilderness section.

Celebrate the successful completion of the trek with your guides, porters and expedition team.

Overnight at Askole or continue by jeep depending on road conditions and the operator's logistics.

Travel: Approximately 6–8 hours by jeep

Leave Askole and travel back through the spectacular Braldu and Shigar valleys towards Skardu.

After days of camping in the Karakoram wilderness, enjoy a hot shower, comfortable accommodation and a well-earned rest.

Transport: Domestic flight, subject to weather

Fly from Skardu to Islamabad when flight conditions permit.

The flight provides another opportunity to appreciate the spectacular mountain scenery of northern Pakistan.

If weather prevents the flight, an overland contingency plan may be required. This is why keeping a flexible schedule is important for any K2 expedition.

Keep the final day as a weather and logistics contingency day.

This buffer is particularly valuable because flights between Islamabad and Skardu can be affected by mountain weather.

If everything operates according to schedule, the day can be used for sightseeing in Islamabad or onward travel.
